Powerful!

What begins as an alternative history story transforms into much more. The historical event was a joint military exercise known as Able Archer 83. Author Logan Thomas Snyder creates a world that might have been.
It’s an interesting treatment of how the United States and the former Soviet Union would be if the military exercise progressed in an unintended fashion. This alone would have been enough to create a compelling storyline. The writer enhances this thought-provoking tale by including a love story.

beautiful and powerful

OMG. I loved Renegat, so beautiful and powerful and a great use of culture. I love Ani and Cal. The combination of romance and sweetness and masculinity is just right. Set against the backdrop of an internment camp brought this touching story to life.

All Too Familiar

There's something about Logan Thomas Snyder's writing. A rawness that touches on what we are as humans -- what it means to feel and simply be. With his short story Renegat, Snyder goes back in time to a time that never was. A time that could have been, but wasn't.
I first read Snyder's story in the Alt.History 101 collection published by Samuel Peralta's Windrift Books. There, the story is just one of a dozen other tales of missed history, yet it peeks out from the cream at the top as one of the best. On its own, the story is bound to be just as evocative. The core of the tale -- people living in concentration camps after the U.S. and Soviets mutually end the Cold War at the height of the Reagan era with nuclear weapons -- is one we are tangentially familiar with. Between the Jews in Europe and the Japanese-Americans in America during WWII, humanity has seen the extremes of the "camp" scenario.
I would actually argue that this story is timelier than ever with the massive relocation of refugees from the Syrian War landing on the doorsteps of most developed nations of the world. What do we do with those people? These people who are escaping the terror only to face an entirely different kind of hate, this time with a passive bent. I appreciate Snyder's story and find its place in the world is all the more appropriate given how we deal with those different than us with each passing day.
