Will put Frejas on your auto-buy list

This is my first Frejas book, and reading it pretty much sealed the deal that she will be on my auto-buy list from here on out. The author is born to write urban fantasy, as proven by her debut effort, Paper Planes Back Home (but that's a different review altogether). The depth of her imagination grabs you from the first page. It feels real and magical at the same time, and it's the kind of strong pull that moves you to turn the page, to hungrily go through each word and navigate through each plot twist.

The Forget You Brew starts with the common enough quandary of a boy who felt he could never confess his love to a girl. It's the kind of self-inflicted problem that makes me want to knock Kyle and Allison's head together to drive some sense into them. But factor in the fantastical world beyond the thick wall of bushes that is Nowheretown, a very helpful girl with bunny ears, a really hot barista in a motorcycle brewing exactly the kind of magical drink you need, and you've got a whirlwind of a story. Personally (and this is a topic for debate), the afforgeto is not my kind of brew, but I understand its intoxicating lure. And if you make the right decision to pick up this story, I'm sure you will too. Did I mention the barista is hot? Okay.

Great textbook.

Business Reorganizations is a well-organized, concise, and practical textbook. The authors do a great job of putting the Bankruptcy Code in context by following the plight of the fictional Aerodynamics Corporation -- a distressed business that is guided through the Chapter 11 process. This hypothetical case -- which is used to illustrate the substantive law in each section of the book -- makes the text a welcome respite from the traditional case book, and I found that this illustrative approach made learning the Bankruptcy Code much easier (and more practical).

Along with making the Bankruptcy Code accessible and easily understood, the authors also ensured that all of the relevant substantive law was covered in detail. Prominent cases are included throughout the text, both in the form of case excerpts and concise notes, and the authors also thoroughly cite and explain the relevant provisions of the Code. Thus, I found the textbook to strike a strong balance between explaining the law in practical terms though the hypothetical Aerodynamics Corporation case while also ensuring that the intricacies of the substantive law are effectively discussed and explored. This balance made my Reorganizations and Workouts class quite enjoyable.

Overall, I found this to be a great textbook. It is one of the few required texts from law school that I have opted to hold onto as I begin my career, and I highly recommend it to anyone.

Great for learning the Code and the process!

This book uses a hypothetical corporation that goes through a Chapter 11 reorganization, and by doing so teaches the events of a Chapter 11 proceeding in a very intuitive and effective way. Furthermore, by referencing the Code throughout, the book makes it easy to quickly grasp the relevant provisions of Chapter 11. This book is great for anyone desiring to understand the intricacies of a Chapter 11 Reorganization.

Outstanding Resource!!

Worth every dime!!! Anita Rui Olds has incredible insight into creating environments that are reflective of children and their interests. She believes that a child care setting should have "spirit." Included are Reggio-type environmental solutions that create a sense of wonder with an architecturally aesthetic sensibility. Lots of great ideas packed into this book. Only regret is that the pictures are too small and not in color. Would have been worth extra [$$] to have an expanded edition.

Fantastic resource, terrible photographs.

This is the first review I've ever felt compelled to write on Amazon. I'm so torn on this book-- Anita Rui Olds was absolutely the preeminent authority on designing spaces for young children, and the value of the information contained in this book alone makes it worth its weight in gold. But I was so terribly disappointed at the quality of the practically-newsprint, see-through pages and dark black & white photos! Even the COLOR charts are in black & white! A large portion of the value of these sorts of curriculum and environmental design guides is in the photographs, which provide both examples of the ideas outlined in the text and further inspiration. This is why I recommend a book like "Designs for Living and Learning" and other books by Deb Curtis and Margie Carter, because the photos in those books are absolutely gorgeous and definitely serve to inspire teachers and other early childhood professionals. But if you're planning to open a childcare center and you need the nitty-gritty details on what shape you want the building to be, how to lay out the floor plan, what colors to paint based on the age group of the children and purpose of the space, etc, then buy this book and just try to ignore the photos, because the information alone will be worthwhile for you.

Long awaited, exceeds expectations

Lavish use of illustrations--photos, sketches, floor plans, and examples--and attractive layout support Ms. Olds's incisive text to create a remarkably accessible book. Many hundreds of child care professionals and architects who have studied under Ms. Olds will recognize and welcome this work as the summation of the concepts that placed the author at the forefront of her field.
More and more children are in institutional care and, "in search of a model," day care typically happens in society's "leftover" spaces, church basements, warehouses, and places intended for adults. This book will help anyone committed to doing better for our children to "see that young children are raised in nurturing, spirited settings that honor their precious young souls." (from the introduction)
The book's only drawback is technical as the reproduction of photographs is of disappointing quality.
Tragically, Anita Olds did not live to see this book published. We can be thankful that she left it for us, full of her passion for children. In its use we will honor her spirit as we effect her designs.

This book adds another piece to the whole UFO mystery, giving some really good detail into a series of occurances comprising a major UFO flap that recently havn't gotten a lot of attention.

Science Fiction, Not Fact

While Frank Feschino has done a great deal of research, his conclusions are pure fantasy. Does anyone really believe a massive air battle was fought between US military aircraft and alien spacecraft, including attacks on two major USAF bases, along the US east coast in 1952? Why are there no eyewitness accounts? Why no photos of crashed aircraft, US military or alien, or smoking airbases? Why has no authoritative UFO researcher/author ever heard of or written about such a monumental incident?

The author divined this air battle after discovering what he believed to be a high number of mishaps involving US military jets of the period. (He also ties in an encounter with what appeared to be an alien being in West Virginia, but more about that later.) He can't believe these accidents occurred for benign reasons such as pilot error (especially running out of fuel), mechanical/electrical failure of various aircraft components, and weather related issues. Had he researched aircraft mishap statistics, however, he'd have discovered pilot/human error has accounted for the vast majority of aircraft crashes throughout aviation history.

I was particularly amused by Feschino's insistence airplanes don't just run out of fuel because aircraft have a fuel gauge that would alert aircrew of such an impending problem. (Automobiles have a similar gauge, but people still run out of gas. In fact, AAA gets more emergency service calls for motorists running out of gas than any other reason save flat tires. The difference is when an aircraft runs out of gas, the pilot can't simply ease off onto the shoulder and wait for help.) The fact is, first generation jet aircraft such as described in the book had extremely high fuel consumption rates, ever more so when afterburners were engaged. Early jet engines were called "thirsty" in the day. In that era preceding aerial refueling, early jets routinely went down due to fuel starvation.

The author also shows a significant lack of understanding about how (and why) the military uses it aircraft. For example, he repeatedly asks why the USAF would allow aircraft aloft if it knew weather conditions were going to be poor or potentially hazardous. The answer is quite simple, the military takes a "train like you fight, fight like you train" approach in preparation for its wartime missions. Considering the majority of the aircraft (F-94s) discussed in the book were radar equipped, all-weather interceptors, why should he be surprised these fighters were training in bad weather? And despite Feschino repeatedly reminding the reader the F-94 was the "state of the art" aircraft of its day, it was quite primitive. The F-94 was based on a jet trainer (T-33) and was never intended to be more than a stop-gap fighter pending the arrival of more advanced models.

As amazed as I was about some of the mishaps the author did include in his book, I was stunned he did not include perhaps the most famous UFO-related loss of a USAF jet fighter, the so-call "Kinross Incident." This occcured in Nov 1953 when an F-89 is said to have collided with a UFO over Lake Superior. This widely reported story was back in the news just a few years ago when the wreckage of an F-89 was found deep in Superior. How can Feschino report on all these other losses, yet omit perhaps the best known incident of its type in American ufology?

On the plus side, Feschino did a creditable job in his coverage of the "Flatwoods Monster", a purported alien encounter involving a half dozen or so local residents in rural West Virginia in Sept 1952. The story, one that got quite a bit of airplay at the time, remains one of the more intriguing incidents of early 50s ufology. The author tracked down and interviewed many of those involved in the original incident, including some who'd never spoken publically or been interviewed previously. Those interviews are even more valuable considering several of them have since passed away. Had he stopped there, I'd be writing a very favorable review. His interpolation of a flying saucer air war tied into the Flatwoods incident and clearly unrelated aircraft accidents stretches the imagination too far, however.

One other thing I found interesting, well-known ufologist Stanton Friedman does both a forward and epilogue for this book. Considering the almost comical play-by-play treatment the author gives this alleged aerial Battle of Jutland, one has to wonder if Friedman even read the book. Friedman also takes a verbal shot at a debunker who addressed the Flatwoods incident by pointing out the man's three degrees (including a PhD) are in English, not a scientific or technical area. And what is Frank C. Feschino's academic background? He's an art school grad and has an associate degree in film production from a junior college. Friedman does not address the author's academic credentials.

And my credentials? I have a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering with over thirty years experience in the aerospace industry, the bulk of that career having been spent in aircrew escape systems/life support equipment and aircraft mishap investigation. As an amateur aviation historian I've had several articles published in aviation/military history magazines in the US and UK. I've also been fascinated by UFOs for over 40 years after a sighting in the early 1970s.

History Gem

I've been looking for this book for over ten years. Finally stumbled on it last night browsing on Amazon for something else. It is one of my top ten history reads of all time, but, not being able to remember either the title or the author from when I read it back in 1996 or so, and having lent it to some miscreant who did not return it!, I've for years been unable to pass it along to others. Bravo for the power of browsing on Amazon!

Peter Hugell provides in this book a fascinating look at how technical and economic innovation have shaped world history. Fifteen years after reading the book, I still find myself using his models in conversations about current as well as historic events. Among other things, he examines the interplay between "hardware" and "software" throughout history. A new ship design provides a "hardware" advance that allows one nation to secure trade advantages over another. The ascendency of the Dutch in world trade was aided by their "invention" of a way to FINANCE the building of a ship before anyone knew who the buyer would be - building ships "on spec". The combination of better ships and a way to finance building an entire fleet of them faster than anyone else propelled the Dutch to world leadership. This is but one example of how hardware and software innovations work together to make history. Debuting in 1995, this book was way ahead of its time if one looks today at the number of history books finally focusing on the underlying economic forces - especially trade - that drive history. Hugell shows how these economics forces follow, like day after night, hardware and software innovations that create fundamental change in the economic equilibrium.

If you want a book on history that will really make you THINK, this is a read you should not miss.

Will make you see the world in new ways

This is an amazing piece of scholarship. I stumbled on it in a used book store. I had never heard of it before and am fairly well read in this sort of thing. It is an exhaustive account of the emergence and development of the system of world trade beginning with the initial Portuguese expansion into the Atlantic in the early 15th century up to the near-present. What makes the book so compelling is its detailed and wll thought out explanations of how technological innovations, especially in transport and communications, fed social innovations that in turn fueled the further expansion of the North Atlantic centered capitalist world system that came to dominate and remake the planet. The book is an excellent complement to the works of Immanuel Wallerstein, Fernand Braudel, Giovanni Arrighi other historians of the longue duree.
