Irritating map typo on p 45: in place of the map of the Vermont/Massachusetts border, they have the map of the Massachusetts/Conneticut border, the very same map that is reprinted again in its proper place on p. 127. Other than that, a useful comprehensive guide to these sections of the A.T.

Very flip-floppy on macro nutrient composition that is "optimal" for performance or weight loss.
Everyone's different. And most research is low-quality so what can you do.
It doesn't tell you that everyone's different and do what works for you, it just says different things in different sections. Sometimes it parrots the food pyramid crap like older nutrition books, other times it says fats are great and low-carb works for a lot of people. Other times it acts like you're going drop dead from the apparent impossibility of glucose/glycogen replenishment from protein and fat stores that may or may not have been mentioned somewhere else in the book. Says low-carb is a myth perpetrated by psychopaths that has not been confirmed by research to be of any benefit, then lower in the page says low-carb may be beneficial for weight control, diabetes control, and heart disease.
Mentions Glycemic index and load. Should also include Insulin Index/Load. Should say that whole-wheat/wholemeal bread are not low GI foods (whereas true whole-grain with intact unmolested kernels do have a low insulin response) . Does not discuss glucose reponse w.r.t mixed meals.

Despite this, it is actually good in comparison to other books of the same type. So it gets 4 stars from me.

Unless this is for school don't get it.

Personally don't like it. I have to get it for class but don't enjoy the material contained in it. I have studied from countless other nutrition books and have found this book to contradict those on almost every level. To the point where this book has even considered Cornflakes "a nutrient dense breakfast".. Crock of you know what

From the Dust Jacket: "In this massive political ethnography and history of the Muslim emirate of Daura (Northern Nigeria) from 1800-1958, the author continues to show his dual concern with methodology and historical reconstruction and analysis. In addition to delineating the structure and changes of power and authority in the evolution of the Hausa kingdom, his analysis raises previously neglected concepts and themes that are important to historians and anthropologists alike. One issue of more general concern to students of the growth of African states is the question about the progressive reliance upon slave officials in developing states, a widely supported assumption which this study tends to belie. As an anthropologist M.G. Smith's contribution to historians is his rejection of a priori notions of causality in favor of precision of observation and method which allows investigators to develop a model from the historical data. Another 150,000 Ukrainian Jews died at the hands of Romanian soldiers. In the quest for a final solution Romania proved to be Hitler's most enthusiastic ally.

In The Silent Holocaust, Butnaru, himself a survivor of the Romanian labor camps, provides a full account and demonstrates that anti-Semitism was a central force in Romania's history. He begins by examining the precarious status of Romanian Jewry in the years prior to World War I. He then reviews the period to the establishment in September, 1940, of the National Legionary State, a period when anti-Semitism became the unifying force in politics. The remainder of the book covers the Holocaust years, and reveals that Romania's premeditated mass murder of Jews was well underway before the Reich's gas chambers became operational. The Silent Holocaust has been called a work of epic and historical worth and it is invaluable for students of World War II, the Holocaust, and Jewish and Eastern European studies.

About the Author

I. C. BUTNARU was in a Romanian labor camp during World War II and lectures on the Holocaust and the arts at Boston University. He was a member of the Society of Romanian Writers. Forbidden to write freely on political issues in Communist Romania, he immigrated to the United States in 1974. He is the author of five earlier books.
