Beautiful and Inspiring Book

Joyce Schwarz's visually beautiful and inspiring book reminds readers of a key life lesson. As she says in the introduction, "Your time is now."

She shows her readers how to take the bull by the horns and take hold of their own destinies by offering moving stories of people (and families!) who have used vision boards to improve their lives.

For those of us who have never engaged in this type of work, Ms. Schwarz offers step-by-step instructions that not only help readers know what to DO, but also make the concept of the Law of Attraction understandable and attainable to even the most skeptical of audiences.

By offering her own framework to help the reader engage in this work (GRABS), which stands for Gratitude, Release and Receive, Acknowledge and Ask, Be and Believe and Share, the author helps readers really understand their roles in what she calls their own "quantum leap." She literally offers readers a "passport to possibility" by describing how to get started both from a spiritual perspective (offering accounts of personal stories, sound advice and tips for expressing gratitude) AND from a practical perspective (even suggesting what type of adhesive to use).

One of my favorite things about this book was that it leads the reader to understand and agree with the premise without seeming preachy or "out there." For example, who can't understand the value of stopping during the day for a short walk or a coloring break with kids? Ms. Schwarz offers these as examples of ways to "say thanks for your body and the power of your mind."

Having read The Vision Board, I suggested that my business mastermind group work on our own vision board projects to help us solidify our goals and propel our plans forward. I plan to incorporate Joyce's ideas when I work with my job-seeking clients as well. I'm so glad that I found Joyce Schwarz's book at just the right time! I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to jump-start his or her plans, even if you aren't already a believer in the Law of Attraction!

A road well traveled with The Vision Board

I've spent a lot of time on the road in my life, traversing continents, traveling up river and down, collecting memories, dreams and goals along the way. It wasn't until I put together a vision board that I started seeing my dream of becoming an internationally bestselling romance author come true. Over the years I've pasted pictures and mementos from Paris (Naughty Paris) Japan (The Blonde Geisha), the Near East (Spies, Lies & Naked Thighs), late 1930s and WWII (Cleopatra's Perfume April 2009)--it's all there on my vision board. But that's not the end of my story, only the beginning...

Having a vision board is like nurturing a relationship--you have to pay attention to it to make it work. Add to it, change it around, but keep it focused. Using the techniques in Joyce's book, I found I'm able to put my goals in a more direct line to get to the next step in my career instead of meandering along that road.

I make changes on my Vision Board on a regular basis, rearrange pictures, add quotes, take down a flyer or note that's no longer relevant to my vision (e.g., I removed Civil War re-enactment photos I had taken when I realized I was going in a different direction with my writing; that doesn't mean I won't go back to that Civil War story someday, just not now).

We all have doubts whether or not we're "doing it right." To me, the most important part of having a vision board is evoking that emotional response in you that helps you keep going even when you have doubts. It's like a favorite piece of music that lifts you up and out of your world every time you hear it. You look forward to hearing it, moving with it, humming along. A good vision board is like that. I've found Joyce's book is the best way not only to get your vision board started, but to keep it going.

The Genius of THE VISION BOARD

As an educator, writer, lover, artist & social activist, I truly appreciated the genius of The Vision Board: The Secret to an Extraordinary Life (Harper Collins, 2008) by Joyce Schwarz. What is most telling about my experience with the book is how successful it was in my classroom. I took what I learned from The Vision Board and incorporated it into a lesson for a graduate school course that I taught earlier this November. The result was eye-opening: not only did my class of graduate students make their own vision boards and intelligently discuss them, but one of my colleagues went on to teach a lesson on vision boards in her own high school classroom. The theory behind The Vision Board is simple yet brilliant: if you can actually see your goals, dreams, aspirations, visions, manifested through images and words right before your own eyes then you will be more likely to achieve them. Joyce Schwarz presents the magic behind vision boards in a dynamic and inspiring way--I was left with a renewed sense of hope for my future and an eagerness to see my aspirations manifested in my own vision board. I promptly created a poster-sized vision board that revealed desires I had scarcely admitted to myself. When my vision board was complete I saw that I had constructed a vision filled with love, health, poetry, art, nature, spirituality, community, optimism, creativity, ambition, color, wealth, and compassion. I realized that the vision statement carpe diem (seize the day) succinctly embodied the way I want to live my life. If I were a marketer for The Vision Board, I would certainly market the book to other educators; the book is a perfect resource for both higher education and primary school.

Blackbeard's Revenge starts up about a year after the first book left off. And things weren't looking especially bright for Edward Thatch and his merry crew of buccaneers. And things don't seem to have gotten much better over the course of the time that occurs between books.

Blackbeard, the man who rides on the majestic ship FREEDOM, as much more than merely a metaphor for his own personal quest, seems to have given up on the idea of being free.

Good thing pirates don't care about things like that!

Okay, let's get down to the gritty. This book is a ton more polished than the first one, and is incredibly fast-paced, considering how long of a book it is. And although there's a ton that happens within the covers of this title, it never seems to get bogged down with too much at any given moment. In fact, Edward seems to be rather singularly focused at most times in the novel, giving him a rather Ahab-esque vibe, which, to be fair, is probably the point.

We see Edward's progress towards being the captain he's supposed to be, but also, more than anything else, see his failures, many of which come back to bite him in the whatsits, some more I'm guessing will do so in future tales of his adventures.

But in the end, this book is really all about family, and how sometimes, you just have to fight for your family, even if the battle seems completely doomed to failure.

This is a spectacular book, one that I think you absolutely should read if you have any interest in pirate fiction. Or action. Or adventure. Or...really, just read it, unless all you like are Harlequins (in which case, what are you doing reading this review even?)

Action packed and riveting, a must read sequel

We start out with Edward aka Blackbeard having been imprisoned for a year; a year in a dungeon without sun, the ocean or his love, Anne. As you can imagine things are a bit grim for Edward but then the tide turns. A jailbreak! Well written and devised this scene starts the book with the action you would expect from a rowdy crew of buccaneers and the action does not stop.

Now that Blackbeard has been reunited with his crew and his ship Freedom he becomes focused on obtaining the keys he needs to unlock the compartments on the ship he had purchased from Benjamin Hornigold. If you did not read the first book, please do, then this will make more sense. I am just kidding, I will tell you.

In the first book Edward wanted to be a whaler and purchased a ship while intoxicated during a card game from Benjamin Hornigold. Unbeknownst to Edward this was a pirate ship and was a catalyst to his becoming a pirate. On the ship there were several doors that remained locked and no matter what the crew tried they were unable to gain access. The doors were sealed with a magical protection and only the keys were able to open the doors. If Blackbeard wants access to those areas, which are actually vital areas, he needs to play Benjamin’s game and prove himself worthy. Yes, you should read the first book because it is just awesome and will help you with this book but I would not say it is necessary.

With his obsession of unlocking the doors revved into high gear, the Captain and crew must complete three tests to open all the doors aboard the Freedom and then Edward will be able to seek his retribution on those who have wronged him and his crew. I loved how the tests were devised! It was like Indiana Jones on the high seas. So well written and you will find yourself holding your breath praying for a good outcome. So well thought out and enjoyable!!

We also have more time to get to know the supporting characters that we met in the first book. The backstories on the crew are comedic, tragic, and add a flavor to the overall book that just makes it a pleasure to read. Henry is still a loyal best friend but we see that there are just some situations that can lead any man to break and make choices that we as a reader dread. Anne has made her choices and is by Edward’s side and has been well and truly written off by her family…which actually bodes badly for her and those around her. Sam has a deeper role in this book and is pivotal to the storyline because his past becomes part of the present for all aboard Freedom. This addition to the story also takes it from fiction to fantasy and is done in a creative manner that will have you engrossed in the details.

This is not the light-hearted crew that we had known. Edward has changed and his choices have led the crew into dangerous situations with more than one tragic consequence. With each loss Edward’s soul is marked and he becomes darker and more what we come to expect from Blackbeard. The book is action packed and riveting. The writing is remarkable and the will have a lasting impact.

Jeremy McLean has a way of drawing me into his books. I was never a big reader before, but this book locked me in and I could not stop reading it until it was over. This book is the runner up to Blackbears's Freedom. The writing style is vary unique and it puts you in the mood of the time and flow of the story. very well done indeed. The story contains some violence and is definitely more intense than the first in the series, however, it is not an overabundance and does not take away from the theme. There is no sexual content in this book which is truly refreshing. Modern authors seem to think that in order to make a story great, they need to add an abundance of sexual content. That is not, however, how Jeremy presents his books and therefore creates a certain quality that I feel most books are missing. Jeremy's books excel above a great number books in the market. I would give this book ten stares if possible. The only complaint I have is that there is no third book yet!

All in all a great job. Keep up the great work Jeremy!

I bought this book because I like Pepe Romero very much. The book is okay, it has short instructions on some techniques, and some notes to practice. I guess I would say it may be good to have it in your library if you are a serious classical guitar student, you may look at some chapters and learn some stuff; but this is not a unique or extraordinary book as I expected. I think you should be intermediate-level player to benefit most from this book. What I should say, this is NOT a method book and is not arranged in a structured way like method books.

Better have your ligado technique down stone cold...

My name is Christian Culleton (Chicago, IL) and I'm posting here on my wife's account.

I was very fortunate to study with Pepe Romero for three day's worth of master classes in 1998 at the Internacional Festival de la Guitarra in Cordoba, Spain. I was incredibly nervous to play for a concert performer of his stature, but he was remarkably warm, humor-filled and deeply interested as a teacher. He channels and exudes everything his father Celedonio taught him. His mood is utterly all about loving yourself, loving your guitar, loving your audience, loving your music, and how all of those things intertwine at every moment. But you gotta have chops to bring about all that synergy.

The warm-exercises in this book are worth the price alone, but I issue this caveat: these exercises are NOT for beginners, and even intermediate guitarists may find the warm-ups difficult. If you don't have a firm grasp of the mechanisms involved with performing ligados, do not buy this book because you'll probably injure yourself. If you struggle with string-crossing, do not buy this book. If you have not developed the fretting finger flexibility to shift adjacent fingers transversally, do not buy this book. If you don't think purely mechanical exercises will seriously help your technique (Exercise Nos. 1 and 2 are not for sissies), don't buy this book. If you can't be bothered to internalize some simple physics concepts about arpeggios, the thumb, slurs, tremolo, etc., do not buy this book.

During his master classes, Pepe covered several (but not all) of the exercises that are presented in the book. HOWEVER, what he does NOT include in this book is his narrative about how to connect with the guitar and approach these exercises. You could think of them as pre-exercises to those given in the book. It is much easier to explain the concepts by just talking about them, describing it here would be too laborious. Someone else here mentioned John W. Duarte, and I'm a huge fan of Duarte's pedagogical works. To learn fretting-hand touch, I recommend studying the book The Guitarist's Hands, written by Duarte and Luiz Zea.

Also in the master classes, Pepe applied speed bursts to a couple of the exercises, and he does not address that in the book relative to the warm-up exercises.

Like at least another poster here, I work out of several technique books concurrently. As long as I'm improving, that's what counts. Some people vilify Ricardo Iznaola's Kitharologus, but it has been my technique bible for many years. Using Kitharologus as a benchmark, I would say that if you have thoroughly completed Level 2 in that book, you'd be ready to begin Pepe's book, but it WON'T be easy. I cannot over-stress how important it is to possess ligado technique that is physiologically sound.

For me, effective ligados are about developing symbiosis in the stretching of the flexor AND extensor muscles of the fretting hand, in order to find their respective mid-ranges for economy of motion and optimal performance (Kitharologus, Level 1, Ex. No. 19); learning the difference in attitude of the fingers, hand and arm when performing the apoyando and tirando pull-off WITHOUT performing a hammer-on (Kitharologus, Level 1, Ex. No. 18); then lastly combining a combination of hammer-ons and pull-offs while working within a four fret area on each string (Kitharologus, Level 1, Ex. No. 20). In all three of these exercises, the picking hand DOES NOT PLAY. When initially studying Level 1 in Kitharologus, there are 20 exercises and you play them in order. So the, last three exercises introduce the guitarist to fretting hand ligado technique only, no picking hand is involved. In Pepe's book, the first two Gymnastic Exercises (Pepe's words in the book) BEGIN with fretting hand-ONLY ligados, and they are not for the faint of heart.

To me, the hammer-on is best executed by thinking and feeling extension through the finger from the metacarpo-phalangeal joint (yes, I know this sounds oxymoronic), while the pull-off, particularly the apoyando pull-off (the finger pulling off comes to rest on the next adjacent string, a fretting finger rest stroke) is triggered from the proximal-interphalangeal joint. When you repeat these two distinct movements over and over again, as in a same-string trill, the motion of the finger becomes orbital, with a seamless shift of energy between the two strokes. It's very important to learn how to empty the fingers of energy immediately after they've performed their tasks, so that they are ready for subsequent tasks.

I'm still waiting for the DVD to be released that is to accompany this book and will most certainly purchase it. In the meantime, Greg Shirer, Pepe's son-in-law, currently has three videos up on YouTube that go through some (but not all) of the exercises in the book. He gives a sublimely effective exercise that you can perform away from the guitar, most likely taught to him by Pepe.

Similar to but different than other books on classical guitar technique.

There are a great many books on the technique of playing the classical guitar. Some of them are exceptional in delivering the technique, some not so much. I own and use several of them. This book never fails to open my understanding not only of technique but how we strive to play a seemingly simple instrument that is so capable of complexities of tone. Playing the classical guitar is about your musicality, the sum total of what you bring to the listener. From the smallest and slightest movement of your finger tip to the rasqueado the coordination of intent, technique, thought and emotion requires not just physical technique but mental understanding and preparation.

Some of what is explained here is available in other pedagogies. At least two of the very capable authors and guitarists of other popular pedagogies learned from either Pepe or Celdonio or both. But, what is different is the gestalt, the dual mode of form and detail. The style of writing crosses and re-crosses the boundary between direction and the meaning for seeking that direction. It is at times sparse and at other times pivoting on adjectives. Here are two examples: “Without releasing the formation of the right-hand position take the hand away from the strings by simply lifting the forearm…” and “Music is sound organized by time. Both time and silence are infinite…sound is the alteration of silence: rhythm is the alteration of time. Sound requires, satisfies and fulfills silence and vice-versa.”

Pepe’s style of writing is as much about meaning as it is about direction. When I am stuck, or repeating the motions but for some, usually simple, reason not making the thing work well I often find myself turning to reviewing the words written by Pepe and that triggers movement that creates the result I knew was lurking in me somewhere.

If you are an advanced beginner or further up the ladder of proficiency this book is a treasure. If you simply want pedagogy any ol’ method may do, but if you want to be reminded that you are working so hard because you love music and especially making music with the classical guitar then this book is a teacher in absentia. It is a useful addition to both my teacher and my books.

Chinese society has changed so fundamentally since 1977 that author Lampton believes the preconditions for re-establishing tyranny such as that under Mao no longer exist. His book is the culmination of 558 interviews conducted over a 40+ year period and follows the style of its leaders from Deng forward, with occasional comparisons with Mao. Overall, he sees a change over the years from a tyrannical style (Mao) to transformational (Deng), to today's technically-skilled leadership styles.

One of Deng's first changes was to define his era as one of 'Peace and Development' and 'learning from others - stark contrasts with Mao's self-proclaimed 'War and Revolution' and 'self-reliance.' Deng was fortune that China no longer faced threats from the U.S. and the Soviets that it had during the 1960s - hence, capitalizing on his strong standing within the military via prior military leadership while combatting the Japanese Occupation, Deng was able to minimize military expenditures, calm potential fears in other nations, and reinvest the savings. Deng saw the importance of motivation via material rewards and emphasized experimentation without ideological constraints, though he sometimes had to tip-toe carefully among Mao's former comrades in doing so. Mao, on the other hand emphasized universal adherence to ideological proclamations - through coercion. Deng thought in terms of progress/capita that would be most meaningful to China's citizens, Mao pursued international strength through rising population numbers. Deng's vision led directly to China's one-child policy. Deng awarded government positions and promotions according to training and prior results, Mao relied on political reliability and seniority. Under Deng, China went from pursuit of Mao's autarky to comparative advantage, and millions moved from the agricultural to manufacturing and services sectors. Urbanization went from 18% in 1978 to over 50% in 2011, and China is now a net importer of food and energy. Regulatory agencies had to be developed from scratch - non-existent under Mao.

Americans see government as a danger, but accountable to the people and kept under control by checks and balances. The Chinese see government as the solution to societal problems, with people accountable to that government. China's central government has become less dominant, per Lampton - 54% of state revenues were spent at the central level in 1980, 18% in 2010.

Prior to reaching the top, China's new leaders have all held positions in administrative units often larger than European nations in terms of land area and/or population. Within those areas they're responsible for everything - including health and education. The outside world rises to the top of the agenda for China's leaders only when external actors/circumstances threaten to connect with unstable/truculent internal forces. Public opinion has become more important than Mao's era.

Major concerns for today's Chinese leaders: Huge social groups, not individuals. The rural masses are still poor ($1,100/capita in 2011, and have a long history of instability and uprisings. China sees itself with 600 million surplus farmers, many dispossessed of their land and paid far less than market value by profiting local governments. Rural migrants who have moved into cities are particularly affected because they lose their farming lifeline for economic downturns. The result - mass resentment in rural areas, followed by rising concerns over pollution.

The one-child policy has created a need for one couple to potentially support four parents. Doing so requires substituting capital for labor, expanding education and R&D. A related problem - China now has 119 males for every 100 females. Tens of millions of workers lost jobs in unviable SOEs in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Another issue - less favorable employment and inferior access to health and education for migrants. Water shortages, especially in northern areas, inflation, income inequality, shoddy construction, Taiwan, and sensitivity to the appearance of external bullying present other major concerns.

Since 1982-83, PLA land forces have been reduced by about 31%, missile forces increased 11%, and the navy remained about the same.

really not good. ill-conceived organization, choppy narrative, almost bereft of detail. reads like a bad undergraduate text. worst flaw is that work is heavy on academic-speak that communicates a minimum of information with the maximum amount of verbiage. examples: "The domestic ebb and flow of money, people, bureaucracies, and the reigning ideas of any given era all affect foreign policy." or this: "Effective nation-states possess a coherent and stable identity, accepted and effective institutions, and a balance between what society demands of the system and what its institutions provide; identity, institutions, and participation collectively constitute the body politic." or this: "Negotiation and diplomacy are related tools of statecraft by which one party induces the other to make decisions and reach agreements consistent with its preferences." to which i can only reply: who knew?

i agree with the other reviewer. read ezra vogel's excellent biography of deng xiaoping. for a good synopsis of the post-deng era you are on your own.

INTERESTING BUT PARTLY WRONG

Avant-Garde Politician: Leaders for a New Epoch

This book is based on exhaustive interviews over many years which serve as an important data base, as explained in an interesting methodological appendix (pp. 233-246). But, as the author himself points out (p. 193): "Chinese negotiators do their homework." Interviews, public announcements and similar oral communications accessible to an American are hardly frank expressions of views and presentation of information.

The author claims that "This volume reveals the human frustrations China's leaders feel, the nightmares disturbing their sleep" (p. 1) and ""what keeps Chinese leaders awake at night" ( p.140). This promise is not and cannot be fulfilled on the basis of interviews and pronouncements, which can and often do hide what is really on the mind of the interlocutor. To penetrate at least somewhat into the mind of political leaders requires working with them for extended periods or at least having full access to internal notes, memoranda, records and similar documentation. Such access was not enjoyed by the author. Explicit full discussion of the limits of relying on interviews etc. should have been included in the book.

This does not reduce the high quality of the analyses presented in the book, such as the recurrent theme of "expanding pluralism of bureaucracy and society" (e.g. p. 198), or the quality of outstanding chapters, such as on policy making (pp. 78-107). But much of the book could have been written on the basis of analysis of Chinese behavior in its regional and global contexts, with interviews serving as an additional resource but not the most important one.

The book provides important insights into China, but it does not provide in-depth understanding of the leaders it discusses. Despite the rejection of general theories and the claim to "understand ...leaders on their own terms" (p. 7), my sense is that some assumptions on their main values and a quasi-rationalistic model served as frames or paradigms for the offered explanations. This is unavoidable, all the more so as the conscious self-understanding of leaders is of doubtful validity, even if frankly expressed -- as is usually not the case. Indeed, the author occasionally refers to leadership models, such as by Max Weber (pp. 62-65) and James Burns (pp. 65-68), but cursory so (where is the "vocation" in the sense of total commitment, which is central to Weber's conception of leadership?).

Instead of the transformative versus transactional leadership dichotomy (while neglecting relevant contingency theory), the author could have made a contribution to leadership theory as a whole, such as by discussing the more history-reverting leaders in innovative terms of avant-garde and foundational leadership moving from "true believers" to more "realism".

More fundamental is my disagreement with the book on the likely future of the People's Republic of China, The author states rather categorically that "to be at the forefront of innovation and technology central to national power, leaders must embrace a fluid and dynamic (open) society that ultimately threatens their grip on concentrated power" (p. 132). I have doubts about such "end of history" outlooks, however widely accepted in the West. New forms of governance may emerge, as illustrated by Iran, which are not fully "open" in a democratic sense but can do well in technological innovations and economic prosperity while maintaining public support.

Furthermore, all countries face the crucial problem "from where does the visionary, public-spirited leader arise" (p. 221). It is not guaranteed that the high-quality leadership needed for coping with emerging radically novel issues will emerge necessarily from contemporary democratic procedures and only by it. A top-down meritocratic regime can in principle prepare such leaders, who then gain support from a majority of the population. In this connection, the lack of information in the book on PRC leadership training endeavor, such as in party and governance schools, is a lacunae.

Albeit, the outlook in the concluding chapter (pp. 219-232) suffers from a more fundamental weakness: complete disregard of radical transformations sure to result from advances in science and technology, such as substitution of artificial intelligence robots, globally integrated information processing, 3M printing and perhaps molecular engineering for many of the jobs, including of the middle classes. Similarly disregarded is the need for a strict global security regime to prevent mass killings by fanatics using viruses mutated in "kitchen laboratories," as increasingly possible thanks to synthetic and emerging quantum biology, and to regulate "human enhancement" - the implications of which go far beyond the dangers of climate change. There may well push towards a new global order, headed by a duopoly of China and the USA, probably after some large calamities.

This "looking into a rear mirror for outlook" mistake is shared by most publications dealing with the future of countries and the global order. Therefore the author is in a lot of erroneous company. This is a mitigating circumstance. But he did miss an opportunity to look forward more innovatively.

Anson Shupe (1948–2015) was professor of sociology at Indiana University–Purdue University, Fort Wayne. He was author or editor of a number of books, including Rogue Clerics: The Social Problem of Clergy Deviance.

kindle app program is krap

No problems with the book, but this my first experience with the kindle reader app/ program what ever, what a crappy way of reading books, you can search fo multiple words, you can only look for one word phrases in it... And there are no page numbers... So when I'm in class and the professors says this will be on page " whatever " I was basically screwed because kindle uses location numbers.... Never will I ever purchase any other ebook through Amazon ever again
