Handy and Useful for Basic Navigation and Getting Around

Because this map covers a huge area its scale is necessarily large. It will give you an overall view of the Peninsula and enough detail to select your routes. Want to take the spur highway to Kenai? This map will make it perfectly clear where the spur intersects with 1 and what to look for before the turn. But don't confuse this with topo trail maps; not enough detail to launch yourself into the unknown.

That said, when you spread this out you get the entire Peninsula. How does Hope fit into your plan to drive from Whittier to Seward? Can you get off 1 and drive along Kalifornsky Beach Road? Just how massive is this Park I'm driving through?

I like Google for really magnified and close-in views. But no web site or app can give you the big picture in any sort of detail. This old school map - its waterproof, it folds, it fits in your glove compartment, you can spread it out on your kitchen table - gives you the big picture when you need it.

The detailed maps of Homer, Seward and Kenai/Soldotna are very helpful and will help you when you get to those places. These three detailed maps do have a lot of info, (markets, gas, shops), that its nice to have at your fingertips.

All of the other stuff - lists of parks and campgrounds and canoeing sites and fishing sites and so on - probably won't be really helpful once you start your trip. They do seem helpful, though, for trip planning because they offer lots of suggestions for further internet research. (48 hikes are described; that will keep your web browser busy.)

So, this is good value, has lots of factoids, gives you the big picture even if the print is tiny, and puts the Peninsula in perspective. That's fine; anyway, they had me at WATERPROOF.

Great map for Kenai penninsula

We just returned from a ten-day trip to Seward and Homer. This map gave us a good overview of the areas we drove through, and lots of info on recreation, wildlife viewing, trails, and more. Best overview map we found of the area.

An easy, uncomplicated read providing good input and worksheets for developing job descriptions. Does not cover in very much depth the physical demands and working conditions piece, which I was looking for. I work in an industry that employs a large variety of positions, indoors and outdoors, desk jobs and physically laborious jobs, and in various weather conditions, and we'd like to address physical demands for ADA purposes. This book seems more appropriate for companies whose jobs don't have such a variety of conditions. I did like, however, the simplicity in which it covered the other aspects of job descriptions.

One of only a handful to simplify the math without dumbing it down!

First, even though the title of this book is "neuroscience," it really IS in the newer field of computational vision that includes both human and machine vision. My field is robotics, and I loved this book!

The first difference between this book and dozens of others, it that it IS a math book on computational vision, not neuron firing and spiking, and attempting to understand vision with "older biology." By this I mean that "newer" biology includes dynamical systems, differential equations, algorithms and computation, even if not overtly discussing machine vision.

The second difference is that it is one of only a few that not only cover the math, but also explain it in English so that those who don't have a year of linear algebra can also "get" it with a little effort. A few of the others include:

1. The CLASSIC by David Marr that started the whole movement of "Can this vision thing (in humans) be the brain using numerical methods to solve Fourier transforms and translate spherical geometry-- Vision: A Computational Investigation into the Human Representation and Processing of Visual Information. This is "old" but still relevant, and you should be able to get a good deal on it used.

2. The MOST RECENT computational vision text by Davies. This is 2012, 900+ pages and NOT cheap. However, given the over 50 titles in this area, Davies is the ONLY ONE that takes the time to painstakingly explain complex engineering at a bright High School level. Not explicitly on the neuro side, but contains a LOT of computational vision topics: Computer and Machine Vision, Fourth Edition: Theory, Algorithms, Practicalities. The next closest text costs over $200 US and isn't nearly as introductory or self study student friendly. Those with a bio background will LOVE this way more than buying 5 separate image and digital signal processsing books, only to find they are way over our heads.

Beyond those two are only a few others that take the time to explain the math both with figures/ diagrams and tables as well as the English and the math: STONE: Seeing: The Computational Approach to Biological Vision; Zeki (one of the best treatments of color vision): Vision of the Brain; and Palmer: Vision Science: Photons to Phenomenology.

There are many others that cover the same material as these fine texts, but they are solid math, assume you can handle differential equations and linear algebra well, and don't give intuitive "co-explanations" for the math. This text, as well as those above, take the time to do that, making it/them ideal for introductions for students coming to math, robotics, machine vision and engineering from other areas (bio, neuro, medicine) as well as auto didacts. Highly recommended. TIP: CHECK both Amazon third parties and Abe books (amazons partner) for these titles USED for significant discounts. I DO NOT recommend these titles for e-readers like Kindle because the math formulas get slaughtered, you'll want the figures close, and you'll want to mark in the margins.

Umberto Quattrocchi earned his first degree in political science from the University of Palermo. He followed this achievement with an M.D., specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. In 1992, he retired from the practice of medicine to pursue his studies in botany across the world while teaching as a professor of political science. Highly prolific, Quattrocchi has numerous political and botanical books and articles to his credit, including those on plants and gardening that have been published in Hortus and The Garden. In 1997, he received the prestigious Hanbury Botanical Garden Award promoted by the Premio Grinzane Cavour for his book Piante Rustiche Tropicali. He received a second Hanbury Award for the bestselling CRC World Dictionary of Plant Names. He is a member of the International Dendrology Society, the Royal Horticultural Society, and the Botanical Society of America. He is also an elected Fellow of the world-renowned Linnean Society.
