Barry Taylor and Ber van Perlo have described and illustrated 145 species of rails, including two that are newly described, and also ten that are recently extinct and two that are almost certainly extinct. The book, based on up-to-date references and on new observations, is the first to give comprehensive information on field identification (including voice), covering all species and races for which details are known. It is also the first to provide descriptions of the immature and juvenile plumages of many species. The authors provide a detailed summary of current knowledge of all aspects of rail biology and their often complex behavior, social structure, and family life. They explain how such apparently poorly flying birds can undertake intercontinental migrations and are such widespread and successful colonists of remote oceanic islands. They also discuss the remarkable ease and speed with which species on such islands have evolved into flightless forms in the absence of predators, a fact that has led to the rapid extinction of numerous island taxa following the arrival of man. Rail habitats are fast disappearing, say the authors, and many rails become endangered before enough is known about them to plan effective conservation measures. The book provides information on distribution, status, habitat requirements, and current threats, and it gives conservation priorities for threatened species.

Rallidae Extraordinaire
By Michael Pate
This is by far the most comprehensive text dealing with the rails and relatives. Contains excellent biological, reproductive and ecological information. The distribution maps are somewhat general but probably intentionally so. The color plates are descriptive and accurate. Even includes the most rare and extinct species. An asset for the wetlands ecologists and Gruiformes specialists.

complete guide to this family
By Mike "Madbirder" Nelson
For many birders these cryptic, shy and often elusive birds are a source of frustration as we stand ankle deep in some muddy bog trying to get a glimpse of one as they flash by, but that one glimpse is often very rewarding. This family guide is an excellent resource for those willing to take the time to seek these wonderful birds out.
This guide covers 150 living and recently extinct members of the Rallidae beginning with the introduction and the layout and scope of the book which covers information about the book itself and how to use it. The next section covers phylogeny and classification in some detail while morphology and flightlessness gives some insight into the family. Habitat, food and foraging, voice, behavior, breeding, movements and conservation and extinction are all covered very thoroughly.
Following this are the 43 plates done by Ber van Perlo, the artwork is decent but lacks crisp detail but all species are represented in a good size and most plates only feature two or three species with male and female or juvenile and sometimes chicks as well as subspecies where relevant. This allows the plates to not be too crowded and easy to follow. On the facing page of each plate is information about each species with descriptions for each image.
After the plates is the systematic section for all the species beginning with each genera given a complete description followed by the individual species covering identification, voice, descriptions of adult, female immature, juvenile and downy young where necessary, measurements, geographical variation, moult, distribution and status, movements, habitat, food and feeding, habits, social organization, social and sexual behavior and breeding and survival are all covered in great detail. Each species is also presented with a detailed range map in grey tones for seasonal movements and for those species with subspecies each range is circled with dotted lines within the range maps. An exhaustive bibliography follows this.
This is a very complete guide though now suffering from being a bit outdated with taxonomic changes but the overall fullness of this guide gives great insight into this fascinating family.

excellent resource
By G. Hunter
Birders whose interest extends to these often cryptic and elusive creatures will be well-served by this comprehensive and authoritative reference. Informative and readable introductory chapters cover taxonomy & classification, morphology, habitat, food and foraging, voice, behavior, breeding, movements, and conservation. The plates are good and the species accounts quite detailed.
