It is so disappointingly far from the real Mo Pai school..

Totally useless. The man does not know the teachings from the first hands. He even did not meet any of the living masters of Mo Pai. Well, and he could not, considering that the Indonesian Master does not teach westerners any longer. This is just a compilation of ideas and thoughts taken from others' books. Not worth to waist your time on. Read the original sources, find the real masters or drown in your own dreams and vanity.
p.s. Since I personally contacted and received some instructions from Jim some time before he passed away I know what I am talking about.

Not the correct training method for Mopai

After making it no further than the end of the sample of this book, where the author gives what he calls the training method for the first level of Mopai, I was extremely disappointed. The training method he mentions is NOT how one develops the first level of Mopai. I have been fortunate enough to receive this practice from two different teachers, one of whom was Jim McMillan (who actually trained with John Chang). What is in this book is a meditation technique, but it is not what is taught within the Mopai. Very disappointing.

Interesting read

As someone who is researching energy cultivation and has interest in Mo Pai, this book was very informative. It gives the reader an idea of what Mo Pai really is and how it may compare to other systems of energy cultivation. This will not replace a teacher, but it may answer some questions and give some clarity to a somewhat mystery-shroud practice. It also opened my eyes and mind to other like systems and some of the known front runners in those disciplines. I'm glad I read it.

wonderful, thought provoking, paradigm shifting, and eminently readable

In this tiny book (about 70 pages of actual text in a book that will actually fit in my pocket), Miller provides 12 short, thought provoking, eminently readable essays on core topics of a religious life. He discusses agency, work, sin, faith, scripture, prayer, history, science, hunger, sex, temples, and eternal life. While each essay could stand alone, there are arcs: The essays on sin and faith work well together, as do the essays on hunger and sex.

This book offers alternative ways to think about many of these well-worn concepts. Miller likens our work of studying the scriptures to Joseph Smith’s lifelong work of translating scripture. “You and I must translate these books again. Word by word, line by line, verse by verse, chapter by chapter, God wants the whole thing translated once more, and this time he wants it translated into your native tongue, inflected by your native concerns, and written in your native flesh.”

In his chapter on sin, he employs an extended metaphor that has stayed with me: We have stories we want to tell about our lives, and sin happens when we focus on our story rather than centering our lives on Jesus Christ and His fabulous will for us. In this telling, guilt and shame have no place; they’re both still centered on us, on how we’re measuring up, instead of refocusing towards the Savior.

Many passages of the book are heady and inspiring, rousing calls to action. The essay on scripture is like that: “Get close to the scriptures. Do anything you can. God is in there.… Underline everything. Pack your margins with notes. Read Paul out loud like poetry … Squeeze their verses like oranges. Know Isaiah by heart. Love Matthew like a brother. Sing the psalms as your prayers.”

Likewise, the essay on agency ends with a great promise: “If you give yourself to this work, if you do more than is asked of you, if you get up before you alarm sounds and work out your own salvation, then you will find…what I have found. You will find as you ‘work out your own salvation’ that ‘it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and work for his good pleasure.’”

The chapter on the temple is, as a friend of mined opined, the best description that I’ve seen of our faith’s temple ceremony that feels appropriate to discuss outside of the temple itself. Likewise, I loved his discussion of Church history and of prayer. I could write more, but the book is short: Just read it.

Miller understands that life is complex. “Once you get to work, you’ll be unnerved by the distance between the neat map in your hand and rough terrain at your feet.” He introduces rich perspectives for navigating that terrain. I read this book over just a few days. I hope to do it again and to encourage my friends and family to do the same.

Miller provides beautiful insights that stretch and reassure at the same time.

Miller's book is something special. It mixes simple practical advice, with thoughtful mediations on how to more fully live life. While written with a "young Mormon" in mind, his insights and counsel are valuable to young and old, Mormon or not.

In recent years, I've struggled in some ways with my own Mormonism, as I've felt a certain amount of staleness creeping in. Reading this book was like opening a window and enjoying the rejuvenation that comes from filling a home with fresh air. Miller helps his readers orient (or reorient) their understanding and relationship with God in a way that lessens fatigue and increases enjoyment. It managed to help me feel both better about my current state, and a renewed desire to be better.

It's a book I want to share, but not one that I want to be without. So I'm buying a 2nd copy specifically for lending.

Some of the best that Mormonism has to offer

This wonderful book is just as it says: letters written from an older Mormon to a younger Mormon. The letters are carefully crafted and concise, addressing 12 religious themes with straightforward honesty devoid of gimmicks or flashy stories. And yet, brief as they are, the letters are simultaneously expansive: expansive in scope, and particularly expansive in terms of effect--I have rarely read a general-audience religious book so thoughtfully, and I am certain that I will return to read this book again with similarly fruitful results.

For example, in the chapter on Sin, Miller begins with "Being a good person doesn't mean you're not a sinner. Sin goes deeper. Being good will save you a lot of trouble, but it won't solve the problem of sin. Only God can do this." A simple introduction to the topic of sin, yet one that immediately reassures the reader that their inability to be perfect is not a sign of failure, but rather an invitation for God's grace to act in their life. The entire book exhibits this particular type of tenderness from author to reader; part of Miller's strength as an author lies in his ability to communicate a genuine love for his brothers and sisters without sounding at all patronizing or condescending.

Read this book. And read it again. You won't be able to help yourself. It truly provides some of the best that Mormonism has to offer.

About the Author
Antón M. Pazos is Vice-director and Senior Research Scientist at the Instituto de Estudios Gallegos 'Padre Sarmiento' (CSIC), President of the Commission Internationale d’Histoire et d’études du Christianisme (CIHEC). He has coordinated research projects on pilgrimages like DICAM (Historical Dictionary about the Way of St James in Galicia) and 'Women Pilgrims', and is the organizer of the International Colloquia Compostela on pilgrimages. He works particularly on the contemporary religious history of Spain. He was Director of the journal 'Hispania Sacra', co-editor of the 'Archivo Gomá' -13 volumes documenting the Spanish Primate during the Spanish Civil War- and has directed more than a dozen doctoral dissertations and research projects.

About the Author

Terry Breverton is the author of numerous books on the sea and pirates, including The Pirate Dictionary, The Pirate Handbook, and Black Bart Roberts: The Greatest Pirate of Them All, A five-time recipient of the Welsh Books Council’s Book of the Month award, he has presented documentaries on the Discovery Channel and the History Channel, and has appeared on numerous other television programs on pirates and privateers. He lives in the United Kingdom.

Much more than trivia!

Terry Breverton has a knack for organizing information and presenting it in interesting, easily digestible chunks. He begins in familiar waters: chapter headings include "An A-Z of Sea Slang," "Sea Conditions and Weather," "Life at Sea," "Death at Sea," "Heroes, Heroines, Sea People and Navigation," and "Villains of the Sea." Read through these sections and you'll learn a lot about types of ships, parts of a ship, a ship's food and medical care, naval weapons, famous captains and, of course, pirates. In "Islands, Ports, Harbours and Capes," Breverton explores the geography of seafaring.

In the final chapters, he casts his eyes a little deeper. "Animals of the Seas" and "The Ocean Environment" delve into biology and zoology, laying out for readers the many fascinating creatures that call the oceans home, as well as the environmental threats against them. Breverton makes a serious case for conservation, detailing the mass extinctions that are occurring even now and projecting what's likely to occur if we continue on our present course.

This is a darling of a book, easy to read at length or keep handy to browse piecemeal.

A great gift idea for the sea-faring lover.

We stumbled upon this book at the Oddysea store in Half Moon Bay, and my husband couldn't put it down. I got it for him as a Christmas gift, and he has enjoyed it. It quickly became a coffee table book in our nautical themed living room, and guests tend to enjoy it as well. I highly recommend it.

Great little coffee table book for the beach house.

Great little coffee table book for our beach house. Interesting cover and lots of little factoids you can either pick up and skim or actually sit down and read through.

Not sure if its the accurate answer but the idea that irish step dancing might have originated from sailors was an interesting tidbit.
