Terrific short book for Christmas

I received an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in exchange for an honest review.

The first book I read by Rachel Schurig was "Lovestruck in London" thanks to a free download from Book Bub. To be honest, I was a little put off by the word "Lovestruck" in the title and almost didn't get it, but then I read the blurb and was intrigued. I read the book and LOVED it...loved it so much I purchased the next two books in the series. When I was given the opportunity to read and review this little book (it is a novella) I jumped.

"Lovestruck at Christmas" continues the story of Lizzie and Thomas five weeks after their London wedding and through to Christmas in Detroit with her family, the Medinas. There is always drama with the Medina family, but all the Christmas surprises lead everyone to realize what is truly important. Despite being a continuation in their story, this novella can easily be read without having already been introduced to the characters; it will then make you want to go back to the beginning and read how they became a couple in spite of their very different backgrounds.

I've been very impressed by how these stories are written. Rachel Schurig has taken a plot that many would daydream about and brought it to life - believably so. The characters are so realistically written that you begin to feel that these are people you know and care about, and want to know better. I especially love that Lizzie and her family bring to life their Hispanic culture in meaningful ways. Another plus - this is a beautiful love story told without all the graphic details...the reader can use imagination to fill in the blanks.

This is a sweet little book just right for the Christmas season. I hope it will eventually be expanded into a full length novel so we can enjoy more of Lizzie and Thomas's story.

Short but sweet!

I love Rachel Schurig's books. They are peopled with such loveable characters and 'Lovestruck at Christmas' continues the story of Lizzie and Thomas from the previous Lovestruck books. It could be read as a stand alone novel though you won't get quite as caught up in it all if you haven't read the other 3 preceding books.

I must admit, I was a bit sad that this was a novella (just that little bit shorter)! It's very much a teaser I hope of a story that will continue with some of the other characters we've met in the series - namely Lizzie's cousin Sofie and the charming movie star Jackson Coles (read 'Sofie and the Movie Star' as part of the LOL vol 2 pack for some more hot gossip on these two!)

Spoiler alerts from the previous books - This short story tells the tale straight after 'Lovestruck Forever', just a few weeks after Lizzie and Thomas get married. They're in the house they're renovating and once again, there are Medina family dramas! Christmas day looms and Lizzie and Thomas are back in Detroit visiting Lizzie's family including the very pregnant Sofie..... No spoilers on this book but you will finish it wishing there was more to read!
I love Lizzie and Thomas and I think a lot of readers will identify with the well meaning but interfering Medina clan.

A great book to snuggle up with and enjoy

Have you ever stepped back and marveled at the best Christmas-time has to offer? Lovestruck at Christmas weaves a warm story of love, laughter, friends, and family! Lizzie and her actor husband, Thomas, have been married five weeks. They have bought a new home that requires a complete renovation. After weeks of hard DIY labor and unexpected disaster, will the home be inhabitable before Christmas? Rachel's characters are so delightful and never fail to remind you that grand memories can be made in every moment. Thomas and Lizzie's friends had me giggling and I felt like I was working right along side them.
The Lovestuck series always has some great family drama. If you haven't read the previous books, I urge you to start from the beginning--Lovestruck in London. In Lovestruck at Christmas, the Medina family, Lizzie's large clan, all work together to bring forth what is truly important during the holiday season. This book will have you laughing and wondering at what is to come in the lives of the supporting characters. Each character is so easy to love. My heart connects to their struggles and triumphs. Life is no easy, picture perfect path, but Lizzie and Thomas point out there is nothing like embracing each moment to dance along the way.

Whether you plan to make a trip or just be an armchair tourist, this book is a goldmine of information on Texas history. Read about where the friendship between Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday began, why the feuding foes were chained together for eternity, and why a notorious outlaw gang voluntarily posed for their own wanted poster.

Oh and by the way, when I said "leads," I meant literally: Franscell has provided GPS coordinates to make finding each site as easy as tapping into your Magellan.

Doesn't get much easier than that, now does it?

GPS Take Me via Ron Francsell's Route

I actually would have loved to have been with the author on this journey. It is a very quick read book and would be ideal for anyone who wants to take this ride. This tour covers a time era that was sometimes truly history for me, and yet it still held my attention with important research and documentation, revived some memories that I had forgotten, and some that will forever be imbedded in my mind forever (example: the murder of JFK). I would highly recommend each person purchasing two books...one for your library shelf, and one for your glove compartment in your car, should you find yourself on one of Texas' highways. The GPS numbers actually give you the exact markers of these events. Quite an interesting trip (and I can only imagine how long a trip that was) in a very unique way.

Ron comes out a-shootin'!!

What a wonderful trip back to Outlaw Texas!!! Ron Franscell has shown us what life was like back when and not-too-far back when as well. This book is a "must read" for those interested in Outlaw Texas and Texas history, true crime, both crime fighters as well as criminals and those who enjoy traveling about to learn more about the history of America and Texas.

Ron has included GPS information in his book so that folks can feel free to load up "Mommer and 'em" and ride off to check out where the bad guys (and the good guys) are buried. The girls aren't left out either with information regarding the distaff side of crime too.

This is just a good, easy read with plenty of photographs and with plenty of giggles along the way too. The book is well-researched and very detailed. It's not hard to see that Ron is a very determined, knowledgeable author who is more than willing to go further than necessary to produce a wonderful book.

Hopefully, those of us who are real "Ron fans" will be adding to our numbers. He deserves all the acclaim he can get for producing a book such as this!!

Great book

This book has a very broad scope on the subject of nano cellulose, and if low on detail in areas is backed up with references to every research paper that has contributed. I believe every budding industrialist should have a copy on his/her shelf, unfortunately no mention of patents that have been filed for use of nano cellulose; this may become a litigious minefield for individuals who wish to develop the industry in future, but we need to promote the development of products like this if we are going to lead a cleaner, greener future, that's what this book does, that's why I love it.

His biography truly documents the story of the composer, replacing the myths and unsupported anecdotes of previous histories. He shows how Joplin's opera Treemonisha was a tribute to the woman he loved, a woman other biographers never even mentioned. Berlin also reveals that Joplin was an associate of Irving Berlin, and that he accused Berlin of stealing his music to compose Alexander's Ragtime Band in 1911.

Although he did not invent ragtime, Joplin (1868-1917) is the best-known exponent of this type of jazz, with its characteristic syncopated rhythms. Berlin (Ragtime: A Musical and Cultural History) shows how Joplin launched his career in the black social clubs of Sedalia, Mo.; achieved success with the Maple Leaf Rag; and went on to win the respect of whites as well as his fellow African Americans, composing numerous rags and two operas, A Guest of Honor (now lost) and Treemonisha. Joplin, whose father was born into slavery, aspired to transcend his humble origins, but because details of his personal history are elusive, Berlin's conclusions about Joplin's often unhappy life and personal relationships tend to be speculative. The author lands on solid ground, however, with his analysis of Joplin's sophisticated and innovative compositions, demonstrating clearly how he expanded the language of ragtime. In the final chapter, Berlin brings the story full circle with a comprehensive summary of the fate of ragtime from its eclipse in the 1920s and 1930s to its comeback in the 1940s and the revival of Joplin's work still going on today. Joplin knew he had a distinctive talent and so did several well-placed contemporaries, yet he never realized widespread acclaim during his lifetime (1868-1917). If he were alive today he could revel in the unique ways his music has placed him at the top: concert artists' repertoire; film music; an annual festival; even a postage stamp. Still, information on Joplin has been sparse. Here Berlin (author of Ragtime: A Musical and Cultural History, LJ 3/1/80) helps by examining dates and events that are in question. Berlin provides two interesting features: a detailed listing of music published and copyrighted by Joplin during his lifetime and the music and text of three songs arranged by Joplin that were left out of NYPL's definitive The Complete Works of Scott Joplin (1981). Readers will want to compare Berlin's book with Susan Curtis's Dancing to a Black Man's Tune: A Life of Scott Joplin (LJ 4/15/94). Recommended for American music collections.

"Most complete biography on Scott Joplin"

The reason I purchased this book was for my Jazz history class presentation on the 'King of Ragtime'. I could not find any recorded live performances by the classical ragtime composer because talking movies were not invented until 1920's long after his death in 1917. This book is just as good as recorded interviews from people who knew him as a friend, a composer, a performer, and a teacher. My teacher complimented me on my presentation for the interesting and valuable information I have shared with the class. This book contains speculations and contradicting facts about the composer. The author did a very diligent research on Joplin's life. It is an excellent book.

Essential reading - for those who care...

Impeccable scholarship. Amazing research. Important musicological insights (my favorite: interviewing the widow of Joplin's Jewish pupil on the subject of the influence of Jewish music on Magnetic Rag. My other favorite: following the traces of the lost second wife, Freddie, who may well have been the inspiration for Treemonisha).
I don't agree with EVERYTHING Berlin says - but that's what makes the world go 'round, no?

Love the music

It was really hoping to learn more about Scott Joplin, the man, but I found myself drowning in the building and technicalities of the music. While that was interesting, it seems aimed more at the true musician as opposed to the true story of his life. All in all, I was disappointed.
