A Fine Memoir from a WWII Survivor

It is important for the stories of wartime survivors to be heard and documented for future generations to understand what they endured. There aren't a lot of survivors left to tell their stories, since the war ended ~70 years ago. Apparently, Hilsenrath has been telling the stories to friends and family for many years, and has been urged to write them down. His frequent retelling of the stories has no doubt kept them crisp in his mind, as his recollection of places and names and events that occurred 75 years ago is quite impressive. He was only 11 at the beginning of World War II, and suffered many deprivations and traumatic experiences through fearful times; however the writing is at times somewhat dispassionate - a recitation of dates and events without any commentary as to how he felt and what effect it had on him. He did comment at the end of the book that his life in America would be the subject of another book, so perhaps we'll get to know more about how his travails affected the rest of his life. Since he is now 86, one must assume that he has a good long life, and hopefully a prosperous one, in America. Hearing more about that would have made this a much more complete memoir.
The book suffers somewhat from the issues of most SPA (self published authors) - formatting errors, incomplete sentences, run-on sentences, incorrect grammar, spelling errors, etc. The writing is good, and it's a fine effort, but is more of a "final draft" and could be vastly improved by a skillful editor. Nevertheless, Hilsenrath has accomplished a great thing - left a legacy of his stories of survival of one of the most gruesome periods in human history.

Not my typical read, but still good. I am still.... amazed.... at what this family endured. I can't wrap my head around it, much less the families that didn't survive. It definitely pulled at my heartstrings.
