Out of date but motivates modern developments

At the time of publication of this book, there was growing interest in how to formulate quantum field theory in spactimes with curved metrics with the intent of studying to what extent a non-flat curvature would change the properties and behavior of quantum fields as compared to the Minkowski case.The authors give an introduction to this research and they do a good job in that regard. Due to the influence of superstring and M-theory on high energy physics at the present time, fewer researchers are studying the problems as they are cast in this book. On the other hand, interest in the Casimir effect and the behavior of quantum fields at boundaries is still very much alive. This book could still be use to motivate this research. It is expected that anyone reading this book will have a background in quantum field theory in flat space, but one could still perhaps read it without such a background.
Quantum field theory in flat spacetime is difficult enough, and it is still not entirely understood from a mathematical perspective. Even the physics of interacting quantum fields is still poorly understood in flat spacetime, especially in its ability to predict a bound state. Therefore, it might seem a bit disconcerting to some for researchers to add further complications to quantum field theory by casting them in curved backgrounds. However, cosmological and astrophysical interests drives this research, as well as more practical considerations arising from the Casimir effect.
The renormalization procedures in quantum field theory are further complicated in curved spacetime via the "trace" or "conformal" anomalies. The reader gets a good dose of these in the book in the discussion on the renormalization of the stress. The idea of an "effective" action, which has been exploited with zeal in the flat spacetime case, appears here also.

The most important thing to carry away from this book is that the idea of a particle in curved space quantum field theory is not very well-formulated, i.e. particle detectors in such situations are not related to the quantity of matter present in a region as they are in the flat-space case. Doing quantum field theory when gravity is present has instigated a huge amount of research, related to the still unsolved problem of just how to quantize the gravitational field.

Excellent

One of the better books on quantum fields that I have read so far. An especially good treatment of the Casimir effect and boudary terms is given. The authors have a wonderfully conversive manner of discourse which I enjoyed very much.

Just as the Nazi Holocaust incinerated naive assumptions about human nature and historical progress, so the flaming collapse of the World Trade Center in 2001 shattered assumptions about status quo, religion, and peace.

Those of us who inquire into the history of the world's religions soon become aware that from the perspective of some of the religions the study of history is bound to be fruitless. Religions are about "what matters most" and to some that means transcending the temporal and in effect abandoning the search for meaning in the historical scene. Picking up a book like this may signify a desire to confirm that view, but it is more likely to signify a kind of bias, an underlying hope that the transcendent/immanent may indeed manifest itself in historical events—that the study of any religion should include its historical influence in social/political arenas as, for example, ethical policy in regard to the earth's resources and the degree to which all of humankind is in its purview. Given our biases, our best course is to try to present the views of others fairly. Will knowledgeable believers find our characterizations accurate?

My elder brother, John B. Noss, spent ten years preparing the first (1949) edition of this book. At that time he found that most publications in the field tended to focus on the biographies of the founders and then jumped to comparing and evaluating the religions' contemporary practices. His preface to the first edition spoke of two special needs to be met: the first was to include "descriptive and interpretative details from the original source materials" and second "to bridge the interval between the founding of religions and their present state" (italics mine).

Those who have used successive editions will recognize an increasing attentiveness to those needs. Primary source materials are not spliced in as undigested chunks but carefully embedded in interpretative commentary. Now color-highlighted, and sometimes further emphasized in color-framed quotations, the sources gain even more of the prominence they deserve. Illustrations have come to play a larger part: in addition to classic art and architecture, there are now depictions of ceremonial realia and explanations of ritual practices. Extended teaching captions go beyond the perfunctory identifications of the subjects.

Resisting trends toward the abbreviating and "dumbing down" of college textbooks to accommodate diminished reading skills, this edition maintains a standard of thoroughness. Instead of abridgement, it offers enhancements: highlighted terms keyed to chapter-end glossaries, reinforcement of key ideas in color-framed quotations, line drawings to relieve solid columns of text, and the inclusion of some novels and light reading suggestions in the bibliography.

Many teachers find a kind of liberation in putting a thorough text in the hands of students. This ensures a ready and reliable reference, relieves the pressure on the instructor to "cover" everything in lectures, and frees up the class time for questions and discussions on topics of immediate interest.

but am still happy that I took the course on world religion

I was required to take a class on religion as a prerequisite for a nursing program I applied to. I ended up choosing a different program, but am still happy that I took the course on world religion. The course, and this book especially, opened my eyes about many of the world's religions. It made me a more open-minded person, and taught me a lot about religion and culture. The lessons I learned from this book and class are priceless. I truly think the world would be a better place if everyone read this book and developed a bigger level of understanding about different faith backgrounds.

This book will fall apart just looking at it.

Paperback binding looks like it was glued by a preschooler. (Previous repair?) Cover and pages are loose, creased, slight tearing around all edges, dog ears on every corner, markings, found post it's still sticking out of the sides of the book!!!! This book should not have been rented out again. It should have been replaced with a stronger book.

Not very helpful

I was hoping this book would be helpful in explaining how better to prepare letter to outside auditors regarding my clients. Most of the book was not helpful at all. The meat, so to speak, could be in a small pamphlet. Plus this book for a small paperback was quite expensive. I was not satisfied with the product.

Not that good, alas!

Petr Kopl's adaptation of "A Scandal in Bohemia" was the freshest as well as the most iconoclastic interpretation of the immortal work penned by Sir ACD. Unfortunately, such words can't be written about this work. In many senses it remains true to the original, and there it falls short of the graphic novel version created by Ian Edginton. It also tries to incorporate cross-references to other classic works, but this time they appear somewhat superfluous. Nevertheless, HOUND is something that can be read in any form, anytime. Too bad that Kopl had set his standards so highly in his first work made available in English.

A fun read

The Hound of the Baskervilles is Petr Kopl's second Sherlock Holmes adaption.

Sherlock Holmes fans will already be familiar with the story of the Hound and quite a few adaptions but what makes Petr's work stand out are the little bits and pieces you see here and there. For example there is a scene from the Solitary cyclist when Sherlock talks about how he followed Milverton for the day his tobacco smoke looks like a skull. on the wall are pictures from A Study in Scarlet and The Dancing Men. You even get guest appearances from Mary Poppins appearing on the roof as well as Jonathan Harker {from Dracula} Dr Jekyll who the hotel reception says "if only every guest was like you" while looking his nose down at Holmes and Watson.

Petr's artwork is perfect for the gothic story. Wonderfully drawn illustrations which

There's also a letter from Sherlock Holmes at the end breaking down each chapter and all the little quirks inside them.

Other things I love are quotes like these.
watson: So to sup it up you'er going to the moor, where you will be in mortal danger to be certain that there is a mass murderer on the estate so you can have a good night's sleep?

Watson: Alright i'll get my coat.

A Different Hound of the Baskervilles

Over the years, I’ve collected literally thousands of volumes related to Sherlock Holmes. Mostly I try to find pastiches, providing additional adventures about Our Heroes, Holmes and Dr. Watson, to augment the pitifully few 60 original stories in The Canon. However, my collection isn’t all pastiches – there are a number of editions of The Canon, as well as countless books of commentary and analysis. As part of that collection, I’ve obtained a number of graphic novels and comics related to the Great Detective, some with original stories, and some adapting the originals. I was very happy to find these very handsome volumes of three of the Canonical tales, as written and drawn by Petr Kopl.

The first thing that should be mentioned is that Kopl did not limit himself to the actual Canon, in that he adds twists, subplots, and outright changes – some very big changes indeed! Although I’m not entirely happy with this – I’m a purist, after all – I understand what his purpose was. When I re-read these Canonical adventures next time, it won’t be from Mr. Kopl’s works, I can step outside of my purism and enjoy them for the little masterpieces that they are.

In Kopl’s adaptation of “The Hound of the Baskervilles”, his artwork is very evocative of the different moods of the story, from safe moments inside, rendered in plain browns, to jagged blues and greens and other dark shadows when on the Moor, facing the threat of the Hound. And at the end, he provides an unexpected Epilogue that might change everything.

Although I disagree with Kopl’s handling of the Canonical stories, I can’t help but admire all the effort and talent that went into producing these handsome volumes. I understand that he has also produced a similar version of Doyle’s “The Lost World”, which I’m sure will please fans of Professor Challenger. I know that I’m curious to see what he does next in the World of Holmes.

Excellent collection!

Amazing book, glad I got it for such a great price! I recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Joans works, although I wish they would do a second version and put out some more of her charts. My only complaint is that the charts go almost right to the spine of the book, making a couple of the rows on each page very difficult to see.

Something is Missing....

Spell of Desire 3 is about Kaoruko and Kaname consummating their relationship in order for Kaoruko to realize her black witch abilities. There's not a lot of action or magic - it's mostly about both realizing the consequences of Kaname discarding his knight's vows in order to be with Kaoruko.

Story: An incubus has been contracted to unleash Kaoruko's black witch abilities. But Kaname isn't the kind to share. Both realize that Kaname will have to perform the ritual if they don't want the Witch council to do the same thing again. But to do so, Kaname will have to be dishonored - is the solution worth the consequences to both?

The story here seems to be all over the place. Ohmi shows that the Black Witch Queen's powers are about control yet the council do a ritual where Kaoruko has no control over the situation in order to 'release' her magic. That doesn't make a lot of sense and doesn't seem well thought out. As well, the vacillating between going to the council then running away then going back again seem like a really poorly executed reason to create tension in the story. It makes both characters, who should look strong for their willingness to sacrifice for each other, rather stupid. Shouldn't someone actually take a moment to come up with a plan?

There is an appearance from a character in one of Ohmi's previous works - a white wolf from Kindan no Koi de Ikou. But he doesn't have much to do and I wish he had done more than cameo. He seems like he could be an interesting character all of his own.

I have to admit, I'm not really liking Kaname. All the pushing around, territoriality, and lack of intelligence is getting irritating. Pair it with Kaoruko's blandness and there isn't a lot of chemistry to be seen between the two.

This is a 5 volume series so I will likely follow it to the end. But I am really hoping for something better than what we've been given so far. Reviewed from an ARC.

Spell of Desire Volume 3

Kaoruko has been saved from the incubus by Kaname's timely interference. But Kaoruko realized that she needed to learn how to be a black witch and Kaname was the only man she want touching her. But now that she has awaken her powers, what obstacles will the Black Witches Coven throw their way?

I must be a masochist since I keep wasting my money on this series. After finishing volume 2, I told myself I was not going to buy the next one since the story just didn't really interest me anymore. Lo and behold, I caved and officially given up. The characters have become one-dimensional and their sexual attraction was lackluster, or nonexistent, at best. The volume’s plot was mundane with her just learning black magic and explanations on the inner workings of the coven. There were a few new characters thrown in but they appeared for a few pages only. The only good thing is that in this volume, Kaoruko and Kaname finally moved on with their relationship. There were a couple of love scenes. The scenes were not too detailed or explicit like "Midnight Secretary." But it's fine with me. In the end, I'm done with the series.

This series just doesn’t stand out to me as much as some. Her first series didn’t either, though. This one might be better, a little.

Kaoruko and Kaname finally get to the mature stuff in this volume, and I guess that’s nice. I do like that their relationship is progressing, and that they’re not resisting it. That’s appreciated. But at the same time, this puts Kaname’s spot in the coven in a bad place. Now he’s lost his position, though it’s not official until the queen comes back. I like that Kaoruko intends to fight that, though, and get stronger so that she can.

I don’t really like the black witches. They’re mean, and I don’t think Kaoruko fits in with them and their beliefs. She’s trying though, and I give her props for that.

I want to finish this series, see how it ends, and I hope I like. It’s not on the top of my list, though.
