Wish I never read it

I really liked this series, until I read this book. The best part was the end and i will only read it cause of how the author left it. That being said I feel like I have missed a book with all the happened.. The last book ended with everyone being happy now all that happiness has been taken away and you don't get the full story. Then she turns Belmont into a cheater just like her ex. At this point I don't want them together and wish she actually end up with Chuck , Belmont's brother. I very disappointed in this book and wish I never read it!!

I don't understand how you could mess with this couple. I was in a funk after reading this book hoping as I neared the end that things would work out but then why would Daisy take Belmont back after he walked out and then had an affair. Don't know how many couples could turn this around after having the evidenced presented in such a graphic manner. I'm hoping the next installment works out better but I'm uncertain whether I will purchase. I think I will re-read the very first book dealing with their initial hook-up. So I do not know that I can whole heartedly recommend this book.

I really didn't care for this book I hate when authors take a story and keep going and destroy the character's now Belmont is this nasty cold cheating business man and in book one he said he'll never hurt or cheat that she be the to hurt and leave him I just think some authors need to stop after the first two or three books before the destroy the character's after we fall in love with them I wish I didn't read this book I should've stop after say you love her I will not read the next daisy and Belmont book I'll just remember like the first one

Brower, the standard treatment of the subject is in English.

The book's five central chapters are devoted to the major court poets and their work; other chapters deal with the forms, assumptions, and themes of court poetry. The author's emphasis throughout is on the human and cultural values of this poetic tradition.

Over 150 poems are included in both transliteration and translation. Many of the translations are joint efforts with Professor Bower; others are new translations by the author. The approach to the poems is essentially critical, and draws on the findings of recent Japanese scholarship.

The Best Introduction to Early Japanese Poetry Available

In his Preface Professor Miner notes that "the immediate origin of this little book" was a course of lectures he gave in 1967, six years after the collaborative publication of Japanese Court Poetry with Robert H. Brower. His reflections in the interim led him "to feel that literary preoccupations need to be tempered with attention to the fundamental human concerns of Japanese court poetry." We are all the beneficiaries of this change in focus.

Japanese Court Poetry is certainly a scholarly landmark, and it does not detract from its stature to claim in the same breath that this concise, well-organized Introduction to Japanese Court Poetry has no equal as an introductory survey. One suspects that the clear, compact presentation may owe something to the fact that the book began as a series of lectures, where every word must be weighed. Miner's opening sentence succinctly defines his use of the phrase "Japanese court poetry" to mean "a historical segment (ca. 550-1500) of what Japanese themselves call waka, or Japanese poetry -- serious verse written in their own language, as opposed to Chinese, from the earliest literate times." (p.1)

He later discusses what he sees as a general contrast between the assumptions underlying Japanese poetry and Western literature. "Their common elements aside, Western literature by comparison reveals a faith in action, in ideas, and in moral responsibiity -- these are what matter. Japanese literature emphasizes human feeling and reflection in participation with much that we think is opposed to man -- especially nature and the divine. The contrast, if simplified more, is between Western faith in persuasive ideas and Japanese faith in cultivated feeling. . . Faith in human feeling -- belief in its integrity and truth -- is probably the most consistent feature of Japanese literature from earliest to contemporary times." (p. 9) Food for thought. . .and discussion.

But Miner also explains the nuts and bolts: kokoro versus kotoba, the forms of poetry (tanka, choka, sedoka, renga, etc.), "pillow-words," honkadori, the poetic diary, and so on. Chapters Three through Seven systematically survey the poetry of Hitomaro through that of major poets to 1500. Chapter Eight recaps Major Themes, followed by a Glossary, a Finding List for Poems, and an Index. A nice tight little package of fewer than 200 pages.

I highly recommend this book both for the general reader and for the student of Japanese literature. (It was Required Reading in a course on early Japanese literature which I taught for many years.)

An interesting and informative book for anyone who is fascinated by Japanese poetry.

I have been fascinated with anything to do with the Japanese martial arts and their poetry forms. In fact my favorite poetry forms are Japanese haiku, senryu, and Tanka. I have read numerous Japanese poetry books over the years but have not read this one until (An introduction to Japanese court poetry by Earl Miner) recently, which I purchased on Amazon for a bargain price.

This 173 page soft cover volume explores in detail the development and process in which the Japanese court poetry had evolved over the years. There are over 150 poems in this text and they further explain what the poet is attempting to relate to the reader. All the poems are presented in Japanese on one side and in English on the other side. This unique book is organized into eight topic areas: Courtly and human values, forms and conventions, Hitomaro, Major poets from 686 to 784, Major poets from 784 to 1100, Major poets from 100 to 1241, Major poets from 1241 to 1500 and major themes. There is also a glossary, finding list for poems and an index.

If you are into Japanese poetry this is a book you should check out. I found it to be a wonderful read.

Probably the Best Introduction

Earl Miner really knows his stuff and struts it in this book. He explains and gives examples. It's not a just sit down and thumb through poetry book, but if you are interest in the development and history this book is great.

The present volume owes its ongm to a Colloquium on "Alchemy and Chemistry in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries", held at the Warburg Institute on 26th and 27th July 1989. The Colloquium focused on a number of selected themes during a closely defined chronological interval: on the relation of alchemy and chemistry to medicine, philosophy, religion, and to the corpuscular philosophy, in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The relations between Medicina and alchemy in the Lullian treatises were examined in the opening paper by Michela Pereira, based on researches on unpublished manuscript sources in the period between the 14th and 17th centuries. It is several decades since the researches of R.F. Multhauf gave a prominent role to Johannes de Rupescissa in linking medicine and alchemy through the concept of a quinta essentia. Michela Pereira explores the significance of the Lullian tradition in this development and draws attention to the fact that the early Paracelsians had themselves recognized a family resemblance between the works of Paracelsus and Roger Bacon's scientia experimentalis and, indeed, a continuity with the Lullian tradition.

About the Author
David Streeter is Reader in Ecology in the School of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Sussex and a member of the Editorial Board of the prestigious Collins New Naturalist series. He has served on the council of the Botanical Society of the British Isles and as chairman of its Conservation Committee and he is president of the Sussex Wildlife Trust.

A beautiful new field guide to the flowering plants of Britain and Ireland

I confess to being a field guide addict, so when I this new Collins Flower Guide at the UK Birdfair, I knew I had to get it. The previous titles in this series - birds, butterflies and trees - are the definitive guides to their respective groups; indeed Collins Bird Guide in my opinion, sets the standard as the best field guide to an avifauna anywhere in the world. So despite the price, it was not hard to part with the money.

Having field-tested this book at the tail end of the flowering season, I am certainly not disappointed. The book is billed as "the most complete guide to the flowers of Britain and Europe", and it probably is. Some 1,900 species are described and the grasses and ferns are treated to full colour plates. The attractive features of the other guides in the Collins series - plates and text on a single spread, clear type-face and layout, compact form, excellent illustrations - are all here. The plates are particularly satisfying: beautifully painted, they look to be the most accurate yet included in a guide of this type. And, as in other plant guides, keys are provided as a more structured way to identify flowers.

But this book faces some pretty stiff competition, namely from Blamey, Fitter & Fitter's Wild Flowers of Britain and Ireland and Rose's Wild Flower Key. How does it stand up? I'm a sucker for Marjorie Blamey's illustrations, so I have most of her books and I love Wild Flowers of Britain and Ireland, not least as an armchair flora. Rose has long (at least for the quarter century since I took any botany classes) been recognised as the most accurate illustrated field flora - the botanist's guide of choice. Despite its fine illustrations and keys, I am not sure that this current guide can rival either of them. I took both Rose and the Collins guide out into Norfolk and ran several plants - tricky things like umbellifers and crucifers - through the keys and Rose performed flawlessly, whereas the new guide was a little murkier. Some of the illustrations are quite "washed out" or at least not as saturated as others, leading to some loss of details - notably in the Asteraceae in my copy. Opened the book at the oaks, I noticed that the Sessile Oak caption is missing - admittedly just a detail. In the end though, much as I warm to the new guide, I find that I am carrying Rose rather than the Collins guide into the field when I want a reference I can depend on. Perhaps it's just that when I pick up a guide, Rose fits more easily into my pocket and is a fair bit lighter.

In sum, this is a guide that the plant enthusiast will want to have, but if you already possess a trusted field guide like Rose, you may not want to pay for the more expensive new Collins Flower Guide, beautiful as the illustrations may be. Having said that, I have no regrets at having this handsome new field guide on my shelves - the more field guides the better.
