About the Author
John has been active in Alcoholics Anonymous since first taking the 12 Steps in 1981. He has found that a simple inventory, meditation and taking others through the 12 steps are the foundation for comfortable and lasting sobriety.
John has been leading 12 step workshops for the past 7 years based on his book The Spiritual Solution, Simple and Effective Recovery Through the Taking and Teaching of the 12 Steps. Nearly 2,000 recovered people have taken the 12 Steps at a workshop.
John has found that those that take the steps as they were presented originally and continue to practice the principles developed in the 12 Steps, including taking others through the steps, stay sober.

Inspirational Reminder of AA's Roots

'The Spiritual Solution' is an inspirational reminder of the original ideals Alcoholics Anonymous was built upon, especially coming to believe or at least being open to the belief that there is a Higher Power greater than ourselves that is in control of our lives.
The author, a member of Alcoholics Anonymous who used the 12 steps to reach his own sobriety, leads seminars about putting the 12 step program to work in an alcoholic's own life. This book is a written version of The Spiritual Solution seminars he leads that are intended to take a person through the 12 steps in one day.
John H. does an excellent job of taking excerpts from The Big Book, written by the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous, and using them as a way of explaining the intent of the 12 steps and how they were meant to be implemented. In particular, he stresses the need of believing in a Higher Power greater than ourselves or at least the willingness to believe one exists, in order to break away from the self-centeredness that is believed to be one of the things at the heart of alcoholism by its founders.
The Spiritual Solution To Alcoholism is an easily read and understood guide to putting the 12 step program Alcoholics Anonymous was founded upon into practice. It is an exceptional tool that may be used alongside the updated version of "the textbook" the organization follows today called Alcoholics Anonymous.

Wonderful explanation of how to make the steps simple and practical

As a physician who is in active recovery and also who treats addiction
I have often observed how difficult people make the steps to be when in all practicality they are overwhelming simple. John does a masterful job of explaining the historical intentions of the founding fathers of AA in taking the steps. I really appreciated as well his observation of many AA groups getting away from the spiritual nature of recovery. Bravo!

Good Book

This is a good summary of the main and most pertinent parts of the steps and how to go through them. It's a good guide for going through the steps and I would recommend it to anyone who is planning on doing so.
